Grande e bello spaccato sul nuovo progetto di @Grip_SS per Shady
Non vediamo l’ora di ascoltare l’intero album, specialmente dopo questa intervista onesta e autentica rilasciata da GRIP ed Em a Complex:
GRIP è straordinario come artista.
Non c’è da stupirsi che Em abbia voluto sporcarsi le mani con la sua arte.
Ha sfogliato il suo catalogo ed è

“GRIP era pronto ad arrendersi.
E poi Eminem ha chiamato.
“Siamo rimasti tutti entusiasti di GRIP dopo aver sentito Snubnose”, spiega Eminem. “È stato davvero rinfrescante ascoltare un nuovo artista così concentrato sulla realizzazione di un progetto concettuale e ha attirato la mia attenzione”.
Mentre la maggior parte delle etichette che operano nel 2021 prendono decisioni radicate nei numeri di streaming e nei follower dei social media, Eminem stava cercando qualcos’altro. “È decisamente fantastico quando gli artisti che firmiamo si connettono con un pubblico più ampio, e 50 [Cent] ne è un perfetto esempio”, afferma Em. “Ovviamente vogliamo che chiunque firmi con Shady abbia successo. Ma prima di tutto ci siamo sempre concentrati sul talento grezzo e sull’abilità dell’artista come MC. Siamo sempre stati abbastanza chiari sul fatto che sia la cosa principale che cerchiamo: abilità e meccaniche fondamentali di alto livello sono sicuramente la priorità”.
“È davvero importante in una collaborazione creativa che ci sia quella connessione personale affinché essa abbia successo”, afferma Em. “Shady è un’etichetta boutique e non firmiamo molti artisti, quindi abbiamo la possibilità di essere coinvolti a un livello più profondo con quelli che scritturiamo. E penso che vada in entrambe le direzioni. Mi piace essere motivato dagli artisti che firmiamo e voglio sentirmi spinto anche dalla loro creatività”.
Per quanto riguarda il futuro, Eminem sta lasciando il lavoro creativo a GRIP. “Le persone che firmiamo hanno un punto di vista e un’atmosfera che ci hanno fatto desiderare di lavorare con loro in primo luogo”, afferma. “Parte del nostro lavoro è aiutarli a raggiungere un pubblico più vasto, ma non mi piace inserirmi dove non sono necessario. Sto cercando di trovare dove e come posso essere coinvolto in un modo che si aggiunge o si basa su ciò che l’artista sta già facendo”.
Grip:
“Eminem è sicuramente un’enorme influenza e qualcuno con cui sono cresciuto ascoltandolo È uno degli artisti che ha plasmato il mio stile e mi ha fatto innamorare ancora di più della musica. Quindi, quando abbiamo sentito che Eminem sentiva la mia musica e voleva lavorare, è stato proprio come dire “Oh merda”.
In un certo senso è stato rassicurante perché, come ho detto, a quel punto mi ero detto: “Sai una cosa, sto per chiudere forse con questa merda”. Quindi ho sentito che a Em piaceva Snubnose e ho avuto una chiamata con lui. Abbiamo parlato per quasi un’ora di un po’ di tutto. Stava persino recitando alcune parole di “226”, parlando di quanto fosse tosta. Allora mi sono detto “Va bene, beh merda, andiamo”.
Complex:
Dobbiamo parlare di “Walkthrough!” Questo è il brano con il feat di Eminem, e quel verso di Em è interessante perché si rivolge direttamente a te. Dice il tuo nome e ti sta parlando, fondamentalmente avvertendoti di cosa accadrà con il successo. Sapevi che sarebbe successo o sei rimasto sorpreso quando l’hai sentito?
GRIP:
Oh, no, sono rimasto sorpreso. Penso che stavo andando al cinema e [il mio manager] Tigg mi ha detto: “Yo, verse di Eminem in arrivo”. E io aspetto, aspetto,aspetto. Continuo ad aggiornare la mia email come un pazzo, amico. Alla fine metto il telefono in tasca, guardo il film e quando esco dal film il dannato verso è lì e lo ascolto e dico: “Oh, merda. Oh cazzo”.
Ho fatto quella canzone con Em in mente. E quando gli ho fatto ascoltare l’album, mi ricordo solo che diceva che il ritornello è pazzesco. Quindi, ero tipo, “Sì, questa è una canzone su cui volevo davvero tu facessi il feat”. Nei miei versi parlo di da dove vengo, di cosa ho dovuto affrontare per arrivare a questo punto. Quindi la sua merda è dal punto di vista di un veterano, che ha già attraversato questo e che pensava che i soldi avrebbero cambiato le cose, ma poi si ritrova nei pericoli di questa merda.
Non ne avevamo parlato prima. Sembrava una buona alchimia, ma soprattutto sono solo contento che ci abbia fottuto abbastanza da saltarci sopra con 32, 40 battute, o quanto tempo sia andato avanti. Ero eccitato. È enorme. Il fatto che abbia persino menzionato il mio nome, era una di quelle cose che ho sempre sognato. Ora davvero il cerchio è completo. Ora ho una traccia con Eminem. È stato un momento surreale.
Con quel verso, è stato come se gli avessi tirato fuori qualcosa. Non vedo l’ora che i fan lo ascoltino, sento che la canzone è fi*a da morire. Spero che sia una delle preferite dai fan, ovviamente sarà probabilmente la canzone più importante. Non probabilmente, sarà sicuramente la canzone più grande che ho fatto .

“GRIP was ready to give up.
And then Eminem called.
“We all got excited about GRIP after we heard Snubnose,” Eminem explains. “It was really refreshing to hear a new artist so focused on making a conceptual project and it caught my attention.”
While most labels operating in 2021 make decisions rooted in streaming numbers and social media followings, Eminem was looking for something else. “It’s definitely great when artists we sign connect with a larger audience, and 50 [Cent] is a perfect example of that,” Em says. “Obviously we want anyone who signs with Shady to succeed. But first and foremost we’ve always focused on the raw talent and ability of the artist as an MC. We’ve always been pretty clear on that being the main thing we look for: high level fundamental skills and mechanics are definitely the priority.”
“It’s really important in a creative collaboration for there to be that personal connection for it to succeed,” says Em. “Shady is a boutique label and we don’t sign a lot of artists, so we have a chance to get involved at a deeper level with the ones we do. And I think that goes both ways. I like to be motivated by the artists we sign and I want to feel pushed by their creativity as well.”
As far as what’s next, Eminem is leaving the creative work to GRIP. “The people we sign have a point of view and vibe that made us want to work with them in the first place,” he says. “Part of our job is to help them get out to a bigger audience but also I don’t like to insert myself where I’m not needed. I am looking to find where and how I can get involved that adds to or builds on what the artist is already doing.”
Eminem is definitely a huge influence and somebody who I grew up listening to. He’s one of the artists who crafted my style and made me fall in love with music even more. So, when we heard that Eminem was feeling the music and wanted to work it was just like, “Oh shit.”
It was reassuring in a sense because, like I said, at that point time I’m just like, “You know what, I’m about done with this shit.” So then I hear Em was bumping Snubnose and I jumped on a call with him. We talked for damn near an hour, and we’re just talking about a little bit of everything. He was even reciting certain words from “226,” talking about how dope I was. It was just like, “Alright, well shit, let’s go.”
We’ve got to talk about “Walkthrough!” That’s the one with the Eminem feature, and that Em verse is interesting because he’s addressing you directly. He says your name and he’s talking to you, basically warning you about what’s going to come with the success. Did you know that was coming or were you surprised when you heard that?
Oh, no, I was surprised. I think I was on my way to the movies and [my manager] Tigg was like, “Yo, Eminem verse incoming.” And I’m just waiting on it, I’m waiting on it, I’m waiting on it. I keep on refreshing my email like fuck, man. I finally just put my phone in my pocket, I watch the movie, and by the time I get out of the movies the damn verse is there and I listen to it and I’m like, “Oh, shit. He went the fuck off.”
I made that song with Em in mind. And when I played him the album, I just remember him saying that hook is nuts. So, I was like, “Yeah, this is a song I actually wanted you to get on.” In my verse I’m talking about where I come from, what I had to get through to get to this point. Then his shit is from a veteran’s perspective, who went through this already and who thought that cash was going to change things, but then he gets into the perils of this shit.
We didn’t talk about it beforehand. It sounded like good chemistry, but I’m just glad that he fucked with it enough to hop on it and give it 32, 40 bars, however long he went. I was excited. That’s huge. The fact that he even mentioned my name, it was one of those things. Now it’s really full-circle. Now I got a track with Eminem. It was a surreal moment.
With that verse, it was like I pulled something out of him. I’m excited for the fans to hear that, I feel like the song is dope as hell. Hopefully that’s a fan favorite—of course, it’ll probably the biggest song. Not probably, it will be the biggest song I’ve done so far, for sure.
